How long will Linux Mint 22.3 be supported?
Until 2029
Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena” released!
The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena”.
Linux Mint 22.3 is a (long term support) release which will be supported until 2029. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use.
AI Overview S.F.C.
The upgrade from Linux Mint 21.3 to 22 (and subsequently 22.3) switches the default audio system from PulseAudio to PipeWire. This often causes temporary sound issues in Firefox (YouTube/Pandora) after a major upgrade, as the browser may struggle to interface with the new audio server.
Here are the solutions, ordered from most likely to least likely, based on your scenario:
1. Restart Audio Services (Immediate Fix)
Sometimes, the audio services need a restart to properly map the browser output to the new PipeWire backend.
Open your terminal and run:
bash
systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse pipewire-media-session
Alternatively, you can just log out and back in.
2. Check Volume in pavucontrol
Linux Mint 22 sometimes defaults Firefox to 0% volume in the advanced mixer, even if your main system volume is up.Open Firefox and play a video on YouTube.
Open your Sound Settings and ensure your output device (Speakers/Headphones) is correct.
Click the Applications tab (or install pavucontrol and open "Volume Control" if not immediately visible).
Ensure Firefox is not muted and the volume slider for it is up.
3. Check for Blocked Audio (Firefox Permissions)
Since you mentioned updating permissions, it is possible audio was blocked. Go to the YouTube video.
Click the padlock icon in the address bar.
Click Permissions.
Ensure "Autoplay" is allowed and there are no blocked audio permissions.
4. Reinstall Media Codecs
Major version upgrades sometimes disrupt proprietary codecs necessary for streaming sites.
Run this command in the terminal:
bash
sudo apt install --reinstall mint-meta-codecs
Restart Firefox after this finishes.
5. Disable Hardware Acceleration in Firefox
Hardware acceleration can cause issues with audio/video syncing after a graphics driver change during an upgrade. Open Firefox -> Settings.
Scroll down to Performance.
Uncheck "Use recommended performance settings".
Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
Restart Firefox.
6. Reset Pulse/PipeWire Config
If none of the above work, your old config files might be conflicting with the new version.Open Terminal: mv ~/.config/pulse ~/.config/old_pulse
Reboot your computer. (This forces PipeWire to create fresh configuration files).
If you are using a very old computer, you may need to look for snd-hda-intel model=auto solutions, but usually, steps 1, 2, or 4 will fix this issue on Optiplex machines.

(VM ware vs Oracle VirtualBox)
CompTIA Linux+ and Other CompTIA + A requirements. March 6, 2026
18 sites
For CompTIA Linux+ and CompTIA A+, there are no official requirements to use one specific hypervisor over the other. Both VMware and Oracle VirtualBox are standard Type 2 hypervisors used to practice the "Virtualization" domain objectives for these exams.
Skillsoft +4
Comparison for CompTIA StudyOracle VirtualBox: Highly recommended for beginners and students because it is free and open-source. It supports a wider variety of disk formats (VDI, VMDK, VHD) and is often easier to set up for basic Linux lab environments.
VMware (Workstation Pro/Player): Offers superior performance and better 3D graphics support. While Workstation Pro is now free for personal use, it is generally viewed as a more enterprise-aligned tool.
Reddit +6
CompTIA Exam Domain FocusCompTIA A+ (220-1101/1102): Requires you to understand the purpose of VMs, configure them, and recognize resource requirements (RAM, CPU, storage).
CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-005): Focuses on managing Linux instances within these environments, including networking (NAT vs. Bridged), storage allocation, and basic troubleshooting of the guest OS.
CompTIA Cloud+ (CV0-004): Moves toward Type 1 hypervisors (like VMware ESXi or Hyper-V) and cloud-based virtualization.

Key Technical Differences
Feature Oracle VirtualBoxVMware Workstation
Cost Free (Open Source) Free for personal use
Performance Good for mid-size workloads Superior/Enterprise-grade
USB Support Requires Extension Pack for 2.0/3.0 Native 3.0 support
Snapshots Supported in base version Supported in Pro (not Player)
Graphics Up to 128MB Video RAM Up to 2GB Video RAM
For your study, Oracle VirtualBox is the most common choice for creating a CompTIA Linux+ lab because of its broad guest OS compatibility.
